At the time of the Middle Ages, the power of a king was limited. He shared the power with the lords and with the church. By the end of the Middle Ages, several monarchs in Western and Eastern Europe had increased their power. These monarchs had become absolute monarchs. An absolute monarch is a king or queen with unlimited power and total control of his or her country.
